About the University of Surrey Archives and Special Collections
To celebrate the start of the University of Surrey’s 60th anniversary year, which begins on Wednesday 9 September 2026, this selection of fascinating images - many drawn from the University of Surrey’s Archives and Special Collections - offers a fond snapshot of life on campus through the decades.
We hope you enjoy them – and please do look out for details of celebratory events coming up across the University over the next 12 months!
While the University was established on Friday 9 September 1966, when it was granted its Royal Charter, the institutional archive dates from the foundation of our predecessor institution Battersea Polytechnic, in 1891 and continues to the present day.
Our Archives and Special Collections also hold several collections related to renowned illustrator E. H. Shepard (Winnie-the-Pooh and The Wind in the Willows), the collections of the National Resource Centre for Dance, and a range of other special collections.
The department works with students, researchers and colleagues from across the University community. Researchers and the public are also welcome to visit to view material from the collections - we are open to all.
Please get in touch via archives@surrey.ac.uk to see how we can help.

From Battersea Polytechnic Institute to the University of Surrey, 1891-1966
Founded in south-west London in 1891, Battersea Polytechnic Institute welcomed its first students in 1894. Its purpose was to provide technical education and practical skills for Britain's growing industrial economy.
Early courses included Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Art and Physics, alongside “Women’s Subjects”, such as Nursing and Domestic Science. Provision of evening classes enabled those in employment to study while working.
In 1957, Battersea became a College of Advanced Technology and was renamed “Battersea College of Technology”. During this period, it expanded its teaching, research and postgraduate provision.
By the early 1960s, the College was outgrowing its space in London, and a new site was sought, with Guildford identified as an ideal location due to its proximity to London and Europe.
In a major milestone in 1966, the College was granted a Royal Charter and became the University of Surrey. Work began to relocate from Battersea to a brand-new, purpose-built campus next to Guildford Cathedral. The move was completed in stages, with the final departments transferring to Guildford by 1969–70, establishing the modern University of Surrey.

We hope you enjoyed this feature and join the anniversary celebrations that will take place throughout the year – keep an eye on SurreyNet for more details. Our new film, published this summer, showcases the wide range of facilities across campus, and the great news is that the evolution is continuing!
The University’s vision, as laid out in Vision 2041, is to create a dynamic, pioneering campus that stands as a destination for education and research, characterised by its sustainable, digitally integrated environment. This includes the development of a campus that blends the ongoing development of teaching, study and research facilities with the need for spaces that support physical and mental wellness.
More information on Vision 2041 is available on SurreyNet or by viewing the Vision 2041 document.
