LGBT+ History Month invites us to remember the past and recognise those whose contributions were too often overlooked. Here at Surrey, we want to make sure these LGBTQIA+ stories are seen and valued. We also believe in creating an environment where new stories can be made and remembered for years to come."

Free Pronouns badge available for all

Head to the Students' Union reception and pick up a free pronouns badge. Wearing a badge is an effective act of allyship with the trans community and for trans people, pronoun badges are also an important tool to facilitate sharing their pronouns.

For as long as humanity has existed, cultures have endured - even when suppressed or marginalised. Despite adversity, they have flourished and thrived under the harshest conditions. Queer history is no exception. Understanding our past and the struggles of those before us is crucial to safeguarding the rights and dignity of every member of the LGBTQIA+ community, ensuring equality and inclusion for all."
Patrick Maddox, LGBT+ Society President

LGBT+ History Month 2026: Science and Innovation at Surrey

The theme for LGBT+ History Month 2026 is ‘Science and Innovation’. At the University of Surrey, we are proud to recognise LGBTQ+ scientists and their contributions to knowledge, discovery, and social progress.

Surrey has a strong connection to LGBTQ+ history in science. The statue of Alan Turing on campus stands as a reminder of his extraordinary achievements and of the injustice he faced. In 2024, we marked the 70th anniversary of his death by celebrating his life and legacy. His statue is also a space where every year, during Trans Remembrance Day, we honour trans people who have died and where the Surrey community came together in 2025 to stand proudly during Pride Month as a sign of support for the LGBTQ+ community.

For much of history, LGBTQ+ scientists received little recognition and were often forced to hide who they were. Over the past nine years, we made a clear commitment to changing this.

Each November, we host LGBTQ+ STEM Day, bringing together researchers and scientists working in industry, who share their personal journeys, research, and the importance of visibility and inclusion in science. These events feature internal and external guest speakers, highlighting both excellence and lived experience, and demonstrating that being open and being a scientist are not in conflict.

Through a project funded by IGNITE+, Surrey is also committed to contributing to positive change. We are examining the barriers and facilitators experienced by LGBTQ+ researchers in STEM and energy research. This work focuses on listening to real experiences, understanding challenges and hopes, and working alongside scientists to co-create solutions. The goal is clear: to make higher education and research institutions more inclusive places for everyone.

Together, these initiatives reflect Surrey’s commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ scientists of the past, present, and future. By celebrating achievement and addressing inequality, we continue working towards a university where everyone feels welcome, valued, and able to thrive.

Look out for the Progress Pride Flag flying over the Piazza throughout the month.
