Alex Pearson (UG - Sociology) and James Bowbrick Smith, for their Quickstep
Alex Pearson and James Bowbrick Smith were crowned Strictly Come Surrey 2024 champions on Sunday night in an electrifying finale to a mesmerising evening’s entertainment.
The pair took first place in the face of superb competition from a high-quality line-up, impressing with a slightly more performative than traditional Quickstep.
Alex – a final year Sociology undergraduate – acknowledged ahead of the competition that the complexity of the footwork required for the Quickstep and the speed of the dance had been a challenge but also highlighted the support and experience provided by her dance partner James, a PhD student and Surrey graduate.
Reflecting on her experience, she said: “I’ve absolutely loved the strictly experience and I’ve met the most wonderful people who are all so talented. Even though it was hard work, I’m so happy to have won and for mine and James’ work to have all paid off! The other couples were absolutely fantastic as well so we’re all winners! I’m so pleased I agreed to take part.”
The competition, run by the Students’ Union and Ballroom and Latin Dance Club (BLDC), took place at the Ivy Arts Centre.
The performances of each of the competing pairs was judged by a professional panel made up of members of the BLDC, SU and GSA with the winners of the competition determined by the audience members in attendance and watching on the live stream.
